Arkadi Memorial on Sunday, November 9th

We invite you to join us this Sunday for a memorial commemorating the heroes of the Arkadi Monastery, a symbol of courage and sacrifice during the Cretan revolt of 1866.

Date: Sunday, November 9th 2025

Location: St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 30 Thorncliffe Park Dr, Toronto, ON M4H 1H8

Story of the Arkadi:

During the Cretan revolt of 1866, the Arkadi Monastery became a beacon of resistance against Ottoman rule. Besieged by 15,000 Ottoman troops, nearly 943 people—mostly women and children—sought refuge inside with 259 fighters. Rather than surrender, the defenders ignited the gunpowder stores, causing a massive explosion that claimed their lives and many of the enemy. This act of ultimate sacrifice shocked Europe and inspired global support for Cretan independence.

Please join us after the service for coffee and koliva, as we come together to honor their memory and reflect on the enduring values of freedom and resilience they upheld.
